First I firmly believe that if the SHTF we will have had plenty of notice (by at least a few hours). This belief means I don't feel I need a "bug out bag", rather I need a plan that will get me and my family safely out of our area or allow us to survive for a few days until rescued.
The most important points for me are:
Food/ water
Shelter
Protection
For a natural disaster we would most likely ride it out in our house which is easy to defend. I feel I only need a few days of water and non perishable food I keep enough MRE's to get us comfortable through a few days up to a week. No natural disaster would keep me and my family stuck at home for longer than a few days. With in a few days we could easily find a way to safety. If we had to walk or drive out to government safety I would arm us primarily with military type weapons, meaning high capacity magazines and basic ball ammo; specifically M-4 and AK platform rifles and military/ police style auto loader hand guns, I don't know for sure exactly which weapons I would take, it would be a last minute final decision. The purpose of a firearm in this scenario is protection; our biggest enemy in this scenario is looters and groups of robbers and you can expect them to be cowards, odds are we would never fire a shot as they would avoid conflict with someone openly and heavily heeled.
The SHTF is the more likely scenario where we would actually leave the house on relatively short notice (still a few hours notice most likely). The plan would be to drive out and only walk if needed. If we have to go on foot we will make in the moment decision an what to take and what to leave. If something happened to where we had to hit the road I would still have MRE's and water but I am confident I could kill or take (steal) what ever we needed to survive. Sound's cold but if the SHTF and big brother collapsed it means we are each on our own. I'll be putting together a team of those I trust and I will take us to a place I know that would be easy to defend and live of the land as needed. I will adopt the philosophy that you are either with me or against me. For shelter we will take tents but the plan would primarily be to squat in what ever our best options were that came up with tents being our last option. My weapon philosophy will change slightly compared to walking out of a natural disaster, my logic here is not only will I need to be able to defend my group and potentially launch an offensive action but I will also need to be able to hunt to provide food for the group. So basically we will be armed in the same military philosophy but with the addition of at least one additional scoped rifle capable of 500 yard shots and a scoped .22 rifle and one 12 gauge pump. As in the natural disaster plan enemies will be robbers and looters but a scenario like this will unleash a lot of real deal wackos, if the SHTF almost for sure everything outside my circle will be a potential threat.
I've always been a natural problem solver and can make hard decisions when needed and these two traits will likely be my biggest asset to surviving.
